This landmark paper defined the treatment approach to acute postoperative endophthalmitis. Vitrectomy was beneficial for cases with visual acuity of light perception only. When intravitreal injections are given, systemic antibiotics had no additional benefit. Intravitreal antibiotics remains the mainstay of treatment for postoperative endophthalmitis today.
